The day started off with a long trek out to Corona, Queens to visit the Louis Armstrong house. I had been before but this time we got a guided tour and it was equally as fascinating as the first time. The guides are very passionate about Satchmo. It’s a little creepy actually!
Then it was back to Manhattan and uptown to SMOKE, my favorite jazz club in New York City although Small’s is quickly becoming my favorite! Frank and staff treated us great and I’m still spinning from VINCENT HERRING’S alto saxophone solo on Oleo. Wow! THE MIKE LEDONNE QUARTET was completed by the leader on organ, PAUL BOLLENBACK guitar and WILLIE JONES III drums. I loved all the tunes! Mike is phenomenal!
After that about 10 of us made the short hop to Bella Luna where guitarists PETER BERNSTEIN and JACK WILKINS were doing a duo show. They sounded awesome!
