13 YEARS and MABERN

Its hard to believe that on August 8 The Cellar will turn 13.  So hard to believe its been 13 years.  It has been a great year.  If you are familiar with the club you know that we rarely celebrate our anniversary in August and wait until sometime in September. This year we celebrate at the end of the month (September 26 – 29).  I’m very excited to have the legendary pianist HAROLD MABERN back at the club and this time he’ll be joined by his bandmates from New York City.  Bassist John Webber will be making his third appearance at The Cellar and drummer Joe Farnsworth will be making his sixth appearance at the club.  Did I mention I’m in the band?  I have to admit I’m a bit nervous. I’ve spent many hours listening to Mabes as he affectionately known on his own recordings on Prestige in the early days or the many many records he’s made with one of my favorite tenor players Eric Alexander.  I’m hoping I can bring something to the fold.

We’ll be making a record at a studio in Victoria after a nice run of gigs:

September 21 – Pender Harbour Jazz Festival

September 23 – Powell River

September 24 – Hugh McRoberts Secondary School

September 25 – Capilano University

September 26 – 29 – Cory Weeds’ Cellar Jazz Club

September 30 – Artspring, Saltspring

October 1 – Vancouver Island University

October 3 – Hermann’s Jazz Club, Victoria

Im also excited to announce a new sponsor for our anniversary and for the month of October. Mill Street Brewing who make a delicious Organic Lager that we serve at the club is coming on board and we’ll be serving their Tankhouse Ale as well!
